Description

In Memody: Sindrel Song, you must mimic memorised musical melodies to empathetically form bonds that'll make life more appealing than death, despite the dark daemon in your head. It's a different kind of music game, more like playing a melodic instrument than just reacting rhythmically. It features a compelling story and cast of characters, with themes exploring coping with mental illness and finding meaning in life. While it aims to touch the heart, there's plenty of humour as well.

History

Everything in the game was made by one person with a broken brain. I've struggled with mental illness all my life: depression, and severe anxiety, where I'm constantly tormented by painful memories of (what my mind tells me is) my social ineptitude. On top of that, I was diagnosed with brain cancer. I had major brain surgery to treat it, which I was told could impair my memory. This game's mechanics allowed me to exercise my memory to prevent it deteriorating. The attentive listening mechanics also encourage empathetically understanding others rather than destroying them with violence. (Check www.sindrelsong.com for a more thorough account of this story.)

Features

  • Mimic melodies using piano-like note buttons, in two 'modes' (light and dark) of six notes each. These play distinct tones that are consistent between songs (eg key 1 plays a Bb in light mode, an Ab in dark mode).
  • Immerse yourself in an imaginative world with deep lore, with lots of clever dialogue that fleshes out seven unique characters, each of whom represents a different outlook towards life, death, and the difficulties we face.
  • Learn seven increasingly difficult songs, each with emotional themes related to the characters, story, and life in general. Finishing songs typically requires several attempts; the player's performance percentage is clearly shown on a graph when the song ends, making clear progress towards a goal.
  • Feel moved by this heartfelt exploration of coping with mental health, finding meaning in life, and empathising with others by listening.
  • The concept, art, music, 3D graphics, writing, programming, and everything else were made by one person while being treated for brain cancer.
